Washington and Du Bois: Strategies for Progress

The teacher facilitated a lesson on the differing strategies proposed by Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. Du Bois for African American progress in the post-Civil War period. Students participated in a primary source analysis activity titled 'Paint the Scene' to compare life in the North and South, while the teacher provided scaffolding by highlighting essential details on the screen. The lesson featured interactive discussions where students debated the relationship between education, economic status, and social respect. Throughout the observation, the teacher demonstrated high mobility by circulating among desks to provide individualized support and encourage participation during the collaborative tasks.
